"Space 1026: Scratch Off the Serial" is a site-specific installation that features the graphic and diverse artwork of eighteen Philadelphians, several of whom have been featured in previous ICA shows. Their work is inspired by graffiti, fantasy and adolescent notebook art, folk art, cartoons, extreme sports, and media-generated imagery. Members and friends of Space 1026 will create a timeline chronicling the four-year history of the collectively-run studio space, a gallery featuring some of the shows that have visited 1026 Arch Street, and an installation of members' recent work. In true Space 1026 style, there will be different music performances at the ICA every Wednesday evening for the duration of the show, and the 'projet MOBILIVRE-BOOKMOBILE' will preview its 2002 tour of artist books and zines on the show's opening weekend. The installation will reflect the group's sense of community and co-inspiration in an exhibition that brings together artists, friends and visitors.

Space 1026 is a gallery and artists' collective located at 1026 Arch Street in Philadelphia, PA. The group was first organized in 1997. Though it started as an idea among a few friends, the collective has managed to grow and expand over the past four years to the current roster of 18 resident artists. From printmaking to graphic design, music recording to video editing, there is a wide range of disciplines and media being used simultaneously in the multiple studios and workspaces. Rather than seeking out grants and funding, the individuals who work there equally share the rent and expenses of running the studio. By taking the financial responsibility off the gallery, they are able to schedule shows without regard to their profitability. Artists who show in the gallery are from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines and include artists based locally and nationally.

Work from the Space 1026 collective will also be on view concurrently at the Print and Picture Collection in the Free Library of Philadelphia's main branch in Center City Philadelphia.

"Space 1026: Scratch Off the Serial" exhibition and brochure are funded by the generous support of Lawrence and Norma Reichlin and the Stockton Rush Bartol Foundation. Additional funding has been provided by The Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, The Dietrich Foundation Inc., the Overseers Board for the Institute of Contemporary Art, friends and members of the ICA and the University of Pennsylvania.
