Mei-Ling Hom: Silkworm Grind

December 2, 2000 - February 9, 2001

Mei-Ling Hom, in collaboration with The Fabric Workshop and Museum, Silkworm Grind, 2000.

Philadelphia artist Mei-ling Hom layers historical references and cultural experiences into sculptural works, often focusing on the experiences of Asian Americans. Her monumental China Wedge, an homage to Philadelphia's Chinatown community, was commissioned for the neighboring Pennsylvania Convention Center and is composed of thousands of white porcelain teacups, soup spoons and rice bowls.

Mei-ling Hom's installation, entitled Silkworm Grind, will be featured in ICA's new Project Space. Produced in collaboration with The Fabric Workshop and Museum, this artwork includes an immense trio of luminous silkworm forms that gently move and quiver in space. Tirelessly spinning in gentle arcs, they describe a patient accretion of minute steps in the patterns of life.

Support for this exhibition has generously been provided by the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Philip Morris Companies Inc., and the Advisory Board, friends, and members of the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania.
