Biographies: Philadelphia Narratives
March 20 - April 25, 1999
Installation view. Photo: Gregory Benson.
This exhibition continued ICA's commitment to exhibiting artists from
the surrounding region and featured artists whose work dealt with biography
and autobiography. The show underscores the depth and range of the visual
arts community in Philadelphia by including artists of several generations
who work in different media. Included were photographer Don Camp, painters
Sarah McEneaney and Marilyn Holsing, fiber artist Bhakti Ziek, and filmmakers
Michael O'Reilly and Shashwati Talukdar.
Biographies also explored a profound development in contemporary art that is
occurring nationally and internationally, as well as regionally: the shift
from conceptual art and abstraction to a more personal, diaristic, or narrative
approach.
