stratascape Asymptote:
Hani Rashid + Lise Anne Couture and Karim Rashid

December 8, 2001-February 10, 2002

This exhibition is a commissioned project and collaborative project between Asymptote Architecture and Karim Rashid. Asymptote Architecture (New York) is a partnership between Lisa Anne Couture and Hani Rashid. On the forefront of new innovations in architecture, their work ranges from experimental installations and digital environments to buildings and urban designs. A recent site-specific installation, OffsideOn, examined urban space as a site of competition, surveillance, and play where private and public spaces interface. Couture and Rashid have designed a data visualization system for the New York Stock Exchange and are in the process of designing the new Solomon R. Guggenheim Virtual Museum. Their built work includes a tensile theater constructed in 1997 in Denmark and they are currently developing a Multimedia Research Facility in Kyoto, Japan.

Karim Rashid (Canada) is Hani Rashid's brother and a well-known industrial designer. He has been designing furniture and products for over 16 years, creating a body of work animated by changing forms, new technologies and evolving market needs. Karim refers to his designs as embodying a "sensual-minimalism," which is evoked by the use of new materials, such as polypropylene that offers crisp, fluid and sculptural forms, as can be seen in the artist's much renowned Oh Chair. A respect for the mundane and a sense of humor also mark his designs, such as in his widely distributed Garbo wastepaper baskets. Other projects have included the popular travel case and bottle for the perfume L'Eau d'Issey by Issey Miyake and the design for the new Con Edison manhole covers that will be installed throughout Manhattan. This exhibition, curated by ICA's director, Claudia Gould, will be accompanied by a color brochure.
