Against the Wall:
Painting Against the Grid, Surface, Frame

December 8, 2001 - February 10, 2002

Karen E. Jones, ICA's first Whitney-Lauder Curatorial Fellow, has curated an exhibition that inquires into the current status of painting, challenging the reemergence of easel painting by highlighting artists who go beyond modernist formal paradigms such as the grid, surface and frame. Presented in ICA's Project Space, the show includes artists from New York and Philadelphia who engage in the disruption of the phantasmagoric aspect of the painterly surface by working with deconstruction strategies, murals, and virtual and three-dimensional methods, in their investigation of alternative painting practices.

Artists in this exhibitions include:
Layla Ali, Janine Antoni, Karin Davie, Nils-Erik Gjerdevik, Ellen Harvey, M. Ho, Jacqueline Humphries, Odili Donald Odita, Peter Rostovsky and Günther Selichar.

Funding support has been provided by The Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, The Dietrich Foundation Inc., the Board of Overseers for the Institute of Contemporary Art, friends and members of the ICA, and the University of Pennsylvania.
